Whether you’re moving into a small apartment in New York, or you’re living in an assisted living facility, many people find themselves downsizing to a smaller living environment. And while there are many perks that come along with living in a smaller space, like less cleaning to worry about and more affordable rent, there are also certain challenges that come with having less square footage.

Perhaps one of the biggest changes is your freedom to decorate. When you have less space to work with, you’re more limited when it comes to your interior design. However, with a little foresight, and strategic organization, you can make even the smallest of spaces feel like a mansion.

Maximize Your Vertical Space

One of the hardest parts of decorating a small space is feeling limited by this floor space. After all, you can only fit so many pieces of furniture into a room when you’re relying solely on the space. That’s why, one of the smartest things you can do is look up. Don’t forget that in addition to the floor, you also have plenty of vertical space available to you.

Don’t be afraid to use shelves for additional storage, and even wall-mounted organizers. You could even put hooks on the backs of doors to organize things that would otherwise take up room on a shelf or tabletop.

Invest in Multi-Functional Furniture

One of the greatest secrets of small-space living is investing in furniture that can be used for multiple purposes. Think of a table that can be repurposed as an ottoman, or a bed that can be closed up into a couch. Furniture that can be used in multiple ways, or folded up and stored away is ideal for making the most out of your space. The idea is being able to tuck things away when not in use to get the most out of your home.

Let the Light In

When it comes to making a small space look bigger, lighting is your number one tool. Besides strategically placing lamps throughout your home, you should also allow as much natural light to come into your home as possible. The more you can embrace light, the more grandiose your home will feel, not to mention it’s a lot more enjoyable to be in! Light colors and a brighter atmosphere are often associated with a happy mood and optimism.

In addition to allowing the light in, you can also make the most out of mirrors. Placing mirrors throughout your home will reflect the light and also the space, making it feel that much larger.  After all, mirrors are the ultimate optical illusion, and if you want to make a real look double in size, look no further than placing large mirrors on opposite walls.
